NFL Playoffs provide Peyton Manning A Chance To Improve His LegacyNFL Playoffs provide Peyton Manning A Chance To Improve His Legacy
UNFINISHED BUSINESS.....On the day Peyton Manning retires from the NFL, he will be hailed by many as the greatest quarterback in league history. Manning has more work to do.
The four-time NFL MVP leads the favored Indianapolis Colts in search of their second Super Bowl title in four years. If Manning wants to erase all doubt about his legacy, it would behoove the nine-time Pro Bowler to capture at least two more Super Bowl titles, matching the number of championships won by his rival, Tom Brady.
Manning's critics love to recite his career playoff statistics: a modest record of 8-8, 18 interceptions against only 26 touchdown passes, and a QB rating (85.3) 10 points lower than his regular-season passer rating.
Manning's mediocre playoff numbers are in stark contrast to his gaudy regular-season stats.
In sum, Manning is a master of the regular season, whose work in the postseason must improve to secure his legacy as the greatest NFL quarterback of all-time.
MORE SCORING OUTBURSTS.....Championship football teams have the ability to score unanswered points. In eight NFL playoff games over the past two weekends, every winning team scored at least 17 consecutive points, including the offensively-challenged New York Jets, who rallied from a 7-0 deficit to gain a 17-7 fourth-quarter lead before holding on for a 17-14 upset of the poorly-coached San Diego Chargers.
In other games, New Orleans hit Arizona with a pair of big scoring runs. The Saints scored 21 straight points after the Cardinals jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, then scored the game's final 24 points to cruise to a 45-14 victory The Colts allowed the Ravens to march 87 yards on the game's opening drive for an early 3-0 advantage, then blanked Baltimore the rest of the game en route to a convincing 20-3 win.
Minnesota, behind the ageless Brett Favre, scored 27 consecutive points, to bomb the Dallas Cowboys and turnover-prone Tony Romo, 34-3.
Scoring outbursts highlight offensive firepower and expose defensive deficiencies. Scoring runs in all sports - football, basketball and baseball - are the key to victory for both the players on the field and those who are speculating on the pointspread outcome.
BE CAREFUL.....Do not overbet your bankroll when dealing with the pointspreads and totals for the AFC and NFC Championship Games. Of the 256 regular-season games and 11 postseason games, this week's market figures to be extraordinarily tight.
The pricing on Sunday's games reflects the true ability levels of the four remaining teams. Everyone knows everything about the two games being offered Sunday afternoon. The storylines are obvious. The games will be analyzed and dissected from now until kickoff. Even the weather is a given as both games will be played indoors. There are no secrets.
How should a gambler approach this Sunday's action? Sharp players will study every aspect of the conference championships in preparation for the countless number of Super Bowl propositions that will be available next week. I like to study down-and-distance situations for little-known players who the coaches trust in critical moments.
A TIGHT MARKET.....Last night's college basketball game between top-ranked Texas and ninth-ranked Kansas State provided a perfect illustration of an efficient marketplace.
Twenty years ago, I would have wagered on Kansas State in the role of a home underdog. In 1990, I would have taken 3.5 points (my estimate) with K-State.
Ten years ago, I also would have played the home-standing Wildcats. My price in the year 2000, with the market sharpening, would have been Kansas State +2.
Last night, KSU closed a one-point favorite at most respected sports betting outlets. I favored K-State, but I refused to lay points in a spot where historically I grabbed a basket or more. I dislike splitting hairs, but I passed a winner (KSU won, 71-62) because I had to draw the line somewhere.
BARRY'S BONER.....Former Georgia Tech player Drew Barry, now a college basketball analyst for ESPNU, owes his viewers an apology. Last Saturday, there was a discussion involving the outstanding women's basketball program at the University of Connecticut.
Geno Auriemma's team has won 57 games in a row. Amazingly, all 57 victories have featured double-digit scoring margins.
Barry got caught up in the hype. "I'd like to see them (the UConn women) play some men's teams and see what happens," said Barry.
Drew, Drew, Drew. Shame on you.
You should know what would happen. Take the worst team in the Big Ten (Iowa) or the worst team in the Pac-10 (Oregon State), or the worst team in Division I (Alcorn State), and the men's team would win going away.
The men's game is played above the rim, while the women's game is played below it. Additionally, and more importantly, women lack the size, strength, stamina and speed to compete with men.
If the UConn women want to feel what their opponents have felt for the past two seasons, allow them to scrimmage a Division I men's team.
I'd love to hear Barry's commentary after the UConn defeat.
TUESDAY'S BEST BET.....Play OHIO STATE -10.5 over NORTHWESTERN. The Buckeyes figure to overwhelm a Northwestern team lacking athleticism in the low post. OSU's Evan Turner should score at will against a poor NU defense.
Credit the 'Cats for their upset victory over Purdue, but realize the win came at home against a struggling Boilermakers team. If visiting N-western falls behind early, expect a dominating win for the home team.
